Please feel free to contact me if you cannot find an answer to your question.
Lots of people have unexpectedly found that counselling has given them a useful place to explore their lives and emotions and have found that beneficial. It is important to find a counsellor you feel comfortable with. For that reason, I offer a free, no-obligation, first appointment so that you can meet me and ask any questions you may have before going ahead with further sessions.
Person-centred therapy is based on the principles developed by Carl Rogers, an American Humanist Psychologist, who developed a way of working as a therapist that respected a person's autonomy and drive towards what he called 'self-actualisation'. In practice this means that I aim to create a non-judgmental environment where certain core conditions, such as unconditional positive regard, are present. This is to allow you to explore your feelings, memories, tendencies and desires in a way that helps you decide for yourself how you want to live.
There is a cost to providing counselling, such as insurance, room hire, continued professional development etc. For this reason my standard fee is £60 per hour. However, I do offer discounts for students and first-responders as I understand that this cost is sometimes prohibitive. If you would like to discuss cost please do get in touch. I'm more than happy to talk about money.
Counselling is effective, in part, because it is a stand-alone relationship. Your relationship with your counsellor should be the only relationship you have with them. This means that anything you discuss in sessions or in other communications should be kept confidential. In practice, this means that I would only discuss clients with my supervisor, and then only in coded terms, never mentioning real names or anything that could identify them. This is so that you can feel free to talk about anything in your sessions, knowing for sure that your private thoughts and feelings can stay just between us.
I believe that only you know how many sessions you need and how often. I leave it completely to my clients to decide when they want to see me. I only ask that you give me a clear 24 hours notice if you need to cancel an appointment.
